On a recent trip home to Connecticut to visit my family, my mom and I went to Knitting Central in Westport. They have a great selection of buttons, including these cute little toggle buttons I used for my latest baby sweater.
For the sweater, I used my Little Coffee Bean Cardigan v.2. The only change I made was that since I was using toggles, I didn’t make any buttonholes on the buttonband.
The make the loops for the toggles you’ll need some minor crochet skills. Here is how I did it:
- Using as small a crochet hook as you have (I used size B1/2.25 mm), make a slip knot and make sure your tail is at least 6″ long.
- Chain 12 (or as many chains as you need to get the length you want. It may take some trial and error to find the right length)
- Chain 1 more and make a knot
- Making sure you have at least a 6″ tail, cut yarn. So what you have in front of you is 6″ tail, then a bunch of chains, and then another 6″ tail.
- Using a tapestry needle, thread one of the tails. Insert the needle into your work at the point where you want to have the toggle loop.
- Pull the needle through until that whole tail is through (but not the chain part!). Once the whole tail is through, take the tapestry needle out and thread the second tail.
- Insert the needle back into your work, just a little above or below where you inserted before
- Pull the needle through until that whole tail is through. Once the whole tail is through, take the tapestry needle out
- Now you should have just the chain section showing on the right side of the work, and the two tails hanging on the wrong side of the work
- Working on the wrong side of the work, knot the two tail ends together and then weave in the ends, making sure its secure
- You’re done!
